According to OpenAI, its new AI-powered video app Sora has outpaced ChatGPT in growth rate during its launch phase. Despite being available by invitation only, the app reached 1 million downloads within just five days.
Launched on September 30 as an AI-driven alternative to TikTok, Sora allows users to create 10-second videos by entering simple text prompts. The clips feature synchronized audio and are generated using an updated model capable of producing more realistic visuals that better reflect physical laws. Another standout feature is "cameo mode," which lets users insert their own face into any generated video. To use this, users must upload a short verification video to confirm their identity and appearance.
Since its release, Sora has seen a flood of viral and bizarre videos featuring celebrities. One of the most shared clips shows OpenAI CEO Sam Altman allegedly shoplifting graphics cards—a clear example of the app’s chaotic creative potential. The cameo feature has already raised concerns among rights holders, but OpenAI has pledged to give them "greater control over content."
“Our team is working hard to keep up with the rapid growth,” said Sora lead Bill Peebles. “More features and fixes for overly strict moderation are on the way.”
For now, Sora is only available in the U.S. and Canada, where it currently ranks #1 among free apps in the App Store.
Previously, OpenAI reported that ChatGPT has 800 million weekly active users.
