Researchers from Peking University and City University of Hong Kong have developed the world’s first multi-band 6G chip, capable of delivering speeds over 100 Gbps. Operating across a wide frequency range — from 0.5 to 115 GHz — it normally requires nine separate radio systems.
The chip measures just 11×1.7 mm and integrates all key components on a single lithium niobate nanofilm. It uses an innovative signal generation method: converting wireless signals into optical ones, then generating radio frequencies from microwaves to terahertz waves. Frequency tuning up to 6 GHz takes only 180 microseconds.
Although still in the early stages, the technology is expected to enable commercial 6G networks by 2030, paving the way for new digital services, smart cities, and transformative changes in everyday life.
